Therefore, you intend to become a movie director? Isn’t that what everybody wants. It’s the controlling thing, and the capacity. Presume about those people following your every dictation. Or maybe YOU‚ÄôVE GOT SOMETHING TO SPEAK OF. Then again, perhaps not. You wish a career, power, and glory. The big question is: DO YOU SEE PICTURES IN YOUR HEAD. If not, forget about being a Film Director, or a Cinematographer.
You you need to realize that a thriving director and cinematographer is capable of stringing pictures together in their minds which is more or less the same with the composer’s capability to hear music even before it was recorded. Now some music artists tinker about on an instrument until they work out a tune: this is not being a real music performer. Real Musicians pick up music in their minds, then jot it down, or play it. Most of us are just hanging about and there is no denying that it is fun to do. Some people say Directing is a vocation, like being a Priest or a Doctor. It’s not remotely like being a Priest or a Doctor, but it may be a vocation, because no-one in their right thoughts would voluntarily go through the kind of hell that a Film Director has to go through. Film Directors not only have to be able to imagine in their heads, but they also have to be able to deal with a lot of very demanding and very distinct types of people. Occasionally someone like Karasawa or Hitchcock show up. People like them are so brilliant that they clearly do not live in the same world as us mere mortals. And it is up to us to Guard and Conserve People like Them – the Brilliant Ones. Long ago the world looks up to these Brilliant Ones. These days Film Directors of all kinds get the treatment, but most of them are not The Brilliant Ones, but are just Mere Mortals trying to get in the limelight and make a decent movie.
There are two things that you have remember if you intend to become a director one is that bad behavior is not necessary and another is that you do not have to load yourself with technical information. He or She can have their minds completely immersed in the Script and the Actors and that’s all right by me. This because it is our responsibility as the crew to impart all the necessary technical expertise. The DP, Operator (maybe the same person) and the Script Supervisor can work out how to shoot the film with the director. Directors who state everything are really dull to work with – especially when they are unpleasant. If they are a Brilliant One individuals forgive them, but if they are just boring, then they don’t.
